International Recruitment

Tackling recruitment challenges

In the global economy, the pursuit of the right talent has become an arduous challenge for businesses spanning various industries. The Office of National Statistics (ONS) reveals that between May and July 2023, the United Kingdom experienced a staggering 1,020,000 job vacancies. This statistic underscores the escalating need for organisations to explore innovative strategies in order to address their staffing requirements. Amidst the ongoing staff shortages and recruitment obstacles, the acquisition of a sponsor licence has emerged as a pivotal solution.

The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), in a press release dated 18th October 2022, painted a stark picture: 56% of surveyed businesses were operating below full capacity due to staffing shortages, and a substantial 76% of enterprises engaged in recruitment were facing significant difficulties. Sectors like manufacturing and hospitality were disproportionately affected, with manufacturing companies grappling with an alarming 82% recruitment difficulty rate.

The global talent pool

Hiring international talent offers an extensive array of advantages that can alleviate the recruitment hardships confronting businesses today. The global talent pool is characterised by its diversity, housing individuals who bring to the table distinct skills, perspectives, and experiences. By tapping into this resource, companies can invigorate their teams with fresh ideas, innovative thinking, and cross-cultural insights. These attributes can drive creativity and effective problem-solving, granting businesses a distinct competitive edge within a rapidly evolving market landscape.

Addressing the skills shortages

Particular sectors find themselves grappling with acute skills shortages, which can considerably hamper growth and innovation. The BCC's report highlights the struggles of industries like healthcare, manufacturing, and hospitality. Opting to hire international talent provides organisations access to professionals boasting specialised skills that might be in short supply domestically. This infusion of expertise can prove instrumental in overcoming technical and operational challenges, empowering businesses to prosper despite industry-wide scarcities.

Retention and reduced turnover

The connection between visa sponsorship and employee loyalty is a powerful one. When companies sponsor visas for international hires, they are not just fulfilling legal obligations; they are laying the groundwork for a relationship built on gratitude, trust, and mutual growth. The investment in visa sponsorship pays dividends in the form of enhanced employee loyalty, dedication, and long-term commitment to the company's success.

What is a sponsor licence?

At its core, a sponsor licence is an authorisation issued by the Home Office that grants organisations the permission to employ non-settled workers. Non-settled workers encompass individuals who lack the right to work in the UK, excluding British and Irish nationals or those holding specific immigration statuses permitting employment. Through sponsorship, organisations enable individuals to secure UK visas, thus providing them the opportunity to enter or stay within the UK for the purpose of working in their sponsored role. The application for a sponsor licence necessitates the specification of the immigration route or routes intended for sponsoring workers. The most prevalent routes encompass the Skilled Worker and Global Business Mobility: Senior or Specialist Worker licences.

The importance of a visa sponsor licence

Possessing a sponsor licence takes on paramount significance in addressing recruitment challenges. It signifies an organisation's proactive commitment to resolving staffing shortfalls. By engaging in the sponsorship process, organisations signal their willingness to invest time and effort into locating suitable talent, irrespective of geographical boundaries. This proactive stance expedites the process of filling critical roles, thus mitigating operational disruptions that may arise from extended vacancies. Moreover, it demonstrates the capacity to adapt to the evolving needs of the business landscape by embracing international talent.
